The NFL Sunday Ticket on expertsatellite is the way to watch football. When I say the way, I mean the only way. I have been spoiled now. This feature is something that you can add on to your DIRECTV satellite package. NFL Sunday ticket allows you to watch 8 games at once on one TV. Now that may be a bit much for some people, but for someone who is a huge fantasy football guy, this comes in very handy. It allows me to keep track of all my players without having to be constantly switching between channels. There is also a feature called “Player Tracker” where you can track up to 18 individual players. There is even a feature called NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go that allows all of the features you get, to be accessed via laptop, tablets or smart phone. You can even stream live videos and highlights to your phone. Now you never have to be disconnected from your favorite team. You can watch them and keep up with them wherever you are.

I need a new Garmin running watch.

My current one (Garmin 405) was a present from my husband and kids in 2010. I love, love, love it but it’s starting to act quite quirky. It doesn’t hold a charge long. It gives out after only 3 hours of me wearing it, sometimes shorter. I have to “reboot” it a lot. It’s starting to get annoying. I regularly access some of the watch forums to find out this freezing up, locking up, etc.

Not sure of what the new Garmin watch is like or what it’s special features are, but I know enough about the running watch to say that I LOVE them! I hope my loved ones find it in their <del>wallets</del> hearts to get me a new one this year. We’ll see!

Smoking is something I’ve never done, mainly because I was always scared of what it would do to me. I have some family members who were smokers for a long time, but have quit smoking in recent years. Their reasons were mostly due to sometimes not “feeling right” and the steady increase in cigarette prices.

Now-a-days as I target good health as one of my overall life goals, I really wouldn’t consider picking up anything to smoke it. And I do mean anything! When I think about some of the high school kids that I went to school with and I see how a lifetime of smoking habits has affected them…my mind is made up on that.

I’ve also heard ex-smoker’s talk about how hard it is for them to kick the bad smoking habit. Even our beloved U.S. President has had some challenges with the stop smoking stint! I don’t disagree that it must be hard to quit once you’ve started, but not starting is the best way to avoid that.

There are lots of tools and resources available to consumers to help with the challenge, but also let me give you some smoking facts that may help encourage you:

1. My absolute first and favorite one is that you’ll have more air capacity to exercise! No more climbing the stairs and giving out of breath. No more going for a walk or a stroll and you can barely get around the block. Finally, a lung full of clean, fresh air. Aaahhhh!!

2. No…More…Wrinkles…At least not around your mouth. But with more free lung capacity, your cells will be hydrated and can then supply your skin with the nourishment it needs to thrive.

3. You will reduce your chances of developing several lung diseases and illnesses including emphysema, lung cancer or severe asthma. These illnesses are extremely hard on your body and your lungs. Living like this can be very hard to do, and this goes for the other people in your household as well.

4. You’ll make more friends. Well, maybe not. But you will eliminate that awful smoke smell in your clothes, hair, car and house. And with that, there will be more people who will want to be around you since you don’t reek of cigarette smoke!

5. No, you don’t have asthma. That’s just a dry morning cough that will also go away if/when you start smoking. If it doesn’t go away, it will at least let up a little so it doesn’t sound like you’re trying to cough up a lung!

You will feel and look like a brand-new person once you give up your habit. Besides looking and feeling great, you’ll also have some extra money from your once-expensive habit. Use it to join a gym, hire a personal trainer, buy some new workout clothes or just bank it and save it. Whatever you decide to do with it, you most definitely deserve!!

I cannot stress enough the importance of hydrating yourself when you’re exercising, especially when you’re participating in endurance sports. I’ve learned this lesson many times, in many ways, often hard. By that I mean it’s taken my thick skull a lot of hits to understand that I HAVE to hydrate and stay hydrated, even on my “off” days or when I’m not thirsty.

If you have any of these tell-tell signs going on in your body, then I would suggest to you that you are not getting enough fluids in your body. You’ll need to make a conscious effort to drink more, and stay in tune with what your body is doing. Have you ever experienced any of these symptoms?

1. Headaches after you’ve exercised, or while you’re engaged in intense exercise?

2. Aches and pains (more than usual) hours after or the day after you’ve exercised?

3. Unusual thirst that sometimes wakes you in the middle of the night?

4. Decrease in sweat production, even when you’re outputting a significant amount of energy?

Now while all of these descriptions won’t fit everybody on every occasion, at least one or two may fit you. The reason I suggest that is because they did with me and I was able to recognize them and jump ahead of them before they caused a problem for me.

I try to drink anywhere from a half-gallon to a gallon a day for the full benefit. To make it easier for me, I fill up some 32 ounce water bottles and keep them on my desk, by my bed, in the car or wherever I’m going to be so I have full access to my water at all times. So as not to sound too “salesy,” I got those Gatorade G-02 water bottles that have a non-leak spout and hold 32 ounces easily. I found mine at Academy Sports but you can also get them online through Amazon.

Another trick I’ve learned that helps me get in all of my ounces is to time my sips. I usually drink about 16 ounces when I wake up, another 16 ounces when…wait, hold on. Let me make a quick list to show you what I do:

8 oz. wake up

8 oz. after bathroom visit

16 oz. before breakfast

16 oz. after breakfast

(so far, that’s 48 oz. and it’s not even mid-morning!)

8 oz. mid-morning (before exercising)

16 oz. lat morning (after exercising)

8 oz. before lunch

16 oz. after lunch

8 oz. mid-afternoon

8 oz. before dinner

8 oz. after dinner

8 oz. late evening

NO WATER BEFORE BED!

By following this rough draft, you should also be able to get in a whole gallon of water for the day. Ain’t life grand?? So, the bottom line is no matter what you drink it from, or if you’re a glugger or a sipper, drink, drink, drink!

Today I started training for my birthday race in September. I’m doing the Virginia Beach Half Marathon, in Virginia Beach, of course. I decided to do a training program that prepares me for a full, that way I’d be more conditioned and mentally ready to do a half. Well, that sounds good in theory, right?

If you’d like to follow along with me, I’m doing the Hal Higdon marathon training program, Advanced I. I tried this running program a couple of years ago, but it was a bit overwhelming for me since I was still in the “newbie” stage. I’m thinking this time, it should all work out great for me, provided I get lots of rest, water and hydration and eat good. Well, the eating part shouldn’t be a problem.

What new exercise goals have you set for the spring, if any? Got any races, challenges or special events coming up? Let me know how you’re coming along.

Thanks for the article from Jermaine Haynes

I spent two long years without a summer break working on my master’s degree. Now, it is time for my last few exams and I am shocked about the way that the professors are giving our last exams. Maybe they are doing this to be nice since we worked so hard and relentlessly over the years. They announced that each of the exams was going to be a take home exam that we could do from our personal computers at home. Of course, we will all need to log in at the same time and there are time limits, but I am really excited. I think doing my test from the comfort of my kitchen using my laptop and clear internet connection is going to be a great testing environment. I will be able to get up and use the restroom and get a drink whenever I want to. I wish that they had let us take all of our tests like this, I’m sure I would have been doing a lot better in school!

It’s true, at least for me it is. Exercising and sweat is hard on both my hair AND my skin. I’ve often gotten a few breakouts after an intense exercise session. But it’s also possible that it’s due to the excess of oils in my (natural) hair that seeps into my face and pores and causes the breakouts.

I’ve also had some issues with skin discoloration, probably due to a hormonal imbalance from my pregnancies, so I’ve been told. I really don’t know what could be causing that issue, but I know that it does annoy me to no end. Why? Well, number one, it just doesn’t look good! I’ve had pretty easy to care for skin my whole life so this change in skin conditions is not so good to me.

In searching for some answers to my plight, I’ve looked at a few over-the-counter products since prescription cosmetic products or dermatological visits can be pricey. I’ve also Googled this facial condition, and it looks like the name of what I have is called “Hypopigmentation.” I’ve tried using the ginger spice remedy, adding extra facial moisturizer to my regimen, and then finally, I thought it was best to just wear makeup…when I exercise…ok, who does that???

Another runner friend told me that she had also suffered with those annoying dark spots too after her third child was born. She said it seemed to exacerbate her condition as well. She recommended the Luminaze product and said that it helped to lighten her dark spots. Well, the great thing about the product was that I could buy it over the counter or online and I could get to it quicker than I would if I had to go to a dermatologist or physician.

I’m attaching a picture of the area under my eyes where this discoloration is a problem. It’s under both eyes, so it’s pretty visible and obvious. I don’t know if you can really see it as clear, but it looks kind of like freckles, maybe? Using the Luminaze product can clear up these freckley spots because it contains natural ingredients in it. There are no harsh acids or chemicals, and since I’m using it under my eyes, I definitely want to be careful with that area. I’m expecting the entire area to be positively affected by this stuff without it looking like I’ve done some drastic skin lightening and also so as not to promote this blotchiness in that area.

I’ll keep you posted on how it goes. Until then, I’m glad to be able to get back out there, sweat and work out as hard as I’d like to without worrying too much about my skin.

Every year on my birthday, I try to target a race or running event to participate in and celebrate another year here on earth. Yeah, some of my friends think I’m weird, but I like it because it makes me feel good and I think it’s a healthy, positive way for me to celebrate.

Last year, I did the Ross Bridge 8k, you know, where the ultimate high-end spa services are located too?! The 8k is roughly a little over 5 miles, so it was a great way for me to get in a good run that day AND feel good about doing something healthy for my body. Turning 44 that day didn’t feel so bad after all!

Something else that I liked after the run were the booths that the organizers had set up for runners. They had places set up where we could get health information and access to things like blood pressure and cholesterol checks, samples of newly-released energy drinks and samples of that new Body by Vi whey protein shake (my friend sells these too). It was all really good stuff!

Another thing that was peculiar, but not really, was that my blood pressure was a bit elevated that day. Yes, it was after the run, and yes, I ran it in under an hour, so that’s why I’m not tooo surprised. The top number was something like 143-44, and the RN helping me wasn’t worried or concerned and did explain that it was due to the obvious circumstances. She also told me that the medical records software that they use for events like the 8k run is not as sophisticated and/or detailed like the electronic medical records software that your doctor’s office would use. So, no worries there. It was just a simple, generic test.

I filled out the appropriate paperwork for consent and release of liability, but they also offered to have my information digitally sent to me or my doctor in case I wanted to pursue any aspect of the test. I thought that was a great idea, especially since the circumstances were under extreme conditions (endurance running). At first I was a little hesitant about doing this “medical” test in such an atmosphere: outside, under a tent, with medical professionals who I didn’t know and who didn’t know me. All of this kind of had me a little leery, but I pretty much determined there wouldn’t be any harm in getting a simple test done like a blood pressure check. After all, you can walk into any local pharmacy and do that too, right?

There wasn’t any harm in having the test done, and I’m glad I did. Since convenience and flexibility is so important to many individuals, physician offices use electronic health records to expedite assessments and diagnoses for their patients. And also, since my husband’s employer has changed health insurance carriers, we have to now sign and consent to a lot of medical procedures on both us and the kids before anything is done, and the insurance carrier has put our information online for us to view. That means that I can quickly access those electronic medical records for myself or the kids whenever I want.

This year for my big birthday, the big “4-5,” I’m doing the Virginia Beach Half Marathon. Another year, one year older, and I plan to take my health assessments just as seriously then as I did for a shorter race. It’s very, VERY important to take care of your health, right?

I’ve been getting ready to participate in the Mercedes Marathon that’s going to be next weekend, and I’m very excited!! This will be either my fifth or sixth half-marathon to compete in but each time I run in one, I never get bored or become presumptuous. Each race is filled with excitement, challenges, goals and an overall feeling of running feel-goods!

Some of my non-runner friends often ask me if I ever get bored or what my next goal may be. I really don’t know the answer to that because I just kind of like to wing it as I go along. I’ve toyed with the idea of doing a triathlon maybe in a year or two, but haven’t really decided. Seeing as that I’ll need swimming lessons (!), I think it’s best to get that under my belt before I go any further. Not to mention all that’s involved in doing those tri’s: hair issues, what to wear (swimsuits, wetsuits or regular running clothes?), where and when the event is held (weather temperatures do matter) and how much exertion will be involved. I need to be in optimal training condition. With all of these factors, I think I’ll just take my time and see what happens.

The cycling portion of the event is another consideration since those bikes can be incredibly expensive! I’m no Lance Armstrong and neither am I Mrs. Armstrong so that’s another consideration for my budget. And not to mention the outfit issue again: can you or should you wear the same wetsuit to bike in that you will use for the swim portion??

There are so many considerations to keep in mind and making quick decisions is something I try to steer clear of. If any of you have done your first bi- or tri-, I’d love to hear about it. Do share because maybe your story will help me decide what to do. We’ll see.
